Despite protests, old oak tree cut down

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Many locals are upset because a beloved tree is now gone.

The large oak on the corner of Greenville Avenue and Oleander Drive had to be removed today because half of it was dead. Crews say the tree split in half when they cut it revealing a rotten core.

Many folks protested the removal of the tree, but in the end, the property owner said it just had to go.

“I’ve seen it forever here, and I really didn’t want to take it down, but it needed to come down. Half of it was gone,” said Chris Gimlin, who cut down the tree.

The tree’s legacy will live on. The removal company is required to plant three new trees in its place.
