Pender County Board of Commissioners hold public hearing on cemetery relocation
SCOTTS HILL, NC (WWAY) — It’s a small piece of land but it is stirring strong feelings.
The Atkinson Cemetery in Pender County is the final resting place for about 50 souls, some for more than one hundred years. Now the owners want to re-locate graves, effectively clear the property.
This brought passionate pleas from family before the Pender County Board of Commissioners meeting in Scotts Hill, Monday night.
Walter Canady has had family buried here for generations; he lets you know exactly how he feels.
“Let the dead rest, why should they be bothered. For some carpet bagger to come in here and make money, they have been there in peace a hundred years plus, why mess with them? That’s sacred ground.”
After hearing presentations from both sides the commissioners decided to continue the matter for 60 days. The issue of the Atkinson Cemetery will be on the July 23 rd. agenda.
The Pender County Board of Commissioners also heard public input on a proposed Hampstead Volunteer Fire Department substation in Scotts Hill.
