STORMTRACK 3: Alberto now a tropical depression, heading out to sea

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Alberto is no longer a tropical storm. The system is now simply an area of low pressure, and has begun to race its way out to sea.

The storm exits the southeast coast without bringing any major impacts to the Carolinas. All we will expect in our area today is a slightly increased risk of rip currents at area beaches. It should be noted that many beaches still do not have lifeguards at this point in the season.

TS Alberto jumped the gun by about two weeks. Alberto is the earliest-forming tropical storm in the Atlantic basin since Ana in 2003. This is also the first time that a tropical storm has formed before the official start of the Hurricane Season in both the Atlantic and East Pacific basins.

Stick with WWAY for all the latest on our early start to Hurricane Season, and check out Hurricanes 101 for all the details. Don’t miss StormFest 2012 and a chance to meet with the WWAY Weather Team to get yourself prepared for any storms that head our way. It’s June 2nd at the Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington.
