Wilmington man accused of punching police officer

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 24-year-old Wilmington man faces multiple charges after he was arrested for punching a police officer. It happened just before 2 a.m. Wednesday at a gas station at 4415 Market Street.

Investigators say Carl Wilkinson was at the store to purchase beer when he had a physical altercation with the store clerk. Wilkinson then returned to the gas station, where officers were waiting, and he proceeded to punch one of the officers.

Police tased Wilkinson as they tried to arrest him, and both he and the officer he punched were treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.

Police say Wilkinson is charged with assaulting the clerk, assaulting an officer, damaging property, and resisting arrest.
