Wilmington man accused of punching police officer in the face
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A 24-year-old Wilmington man faces multiple charges after he was arrested for punching a police officer in the face. It happened just before 2 a.m. Tuesday at the Scotchman at 4415 Market Street.
Wilmington Police say Carl Wilkinson was at the store to purchase beer when the clerk refused to sell it to him. He then started damaging shelves and other items in the store. Wilkinson left the store, and upon returning, tried to steal a beer but the clerk stopped him, resulting in a physical altercation.
Authorities arrived and located Wilkinson behind 4401 Market St. when one of the Patrol Officers confronted Mr. Wilkinson and ordered him several times to show his hands, which were bloody.
The officer then grabbed Wilkinson’s left wrist to detain him when he punched the officer in the left eye. Several officers then tried to take Wilkinson into custody but he continued to fight. The injured officer deployed his taser and Wilkinson was taken into custody.
Both Wilkinson and the officer he punched were treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center for minor injuries. Police say Wilkinson is being charged with assaulting the clerk, assaulting an officer, damaging property, and resisting arrest.
