Petition signatures verified; smoking ban push at Wrightsville Beach moves forward
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) –- The New Hanover County Board of Elections has verified 233 of the 294 signatures submitted on a petition to put a smoking ban in place on Wrightsville Beach.
According to the town charter, if 35 percent of the voter turnout in the most recent election petitions the town, which is 211 signatures in this case, the Board of Aldermen must either adopt the ordinance or put it up to a vote.
Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Bob Simpson says the board will most likely hold a special meeting June 7 to discuss where they will go from here. Because the board voted 3-2 against a smoking ban earlier this year, Simpson says he expects the ban to go to a vote during the general election in November.
