Anti-annexation bills clear another hurdle in Raleigh

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — Forced annexation may soon be dead in North Carolina. The state House of Representatives voted today to move forward with two bills that would give residents a voice in the decision.

One overturns the annexation of Monkey Junction, an area around Southport and seven other areas across the state. It also keeps those cities from trying to annex the areas again for 12 years.

The other essentially does away with the idea of forced, or involuntary, annexation and allows people living in the areas being considered to vote if they want to be incorporated.

Because it is a local bill, House Bill 5 would become law if it passes the House on its third and final reading last week. House Bill 925 must go through one more reading in the house before it heads to the governor for her signature. There’s no definitive word from the governor’s office on whether Gov. Bev Perdue will sign or veto it.
