STORMTRACK 3: Offshore storm could become Tropical Storm. VIDEO UPDATE

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An area of low pressure offshore is quickly tracking northward, and could strengthen into Tropical Storm Beryl this weekend. Right now, the system is weak and disorganized but is expected to gain some strength as it heads toward the Carolinas tonight.

For Saturday, the storm system will be off the coast, but close enough that we will see some impacts. Right now, it looks like some clouds will move over land with a few showers possible along the coast from time to time. There will also be some gusty winds up to 25-30 mph at times, but below Tropical Storm force. We want to note that this does not look like a washout whatsoever.

Perhaps the biggest impact from the storm will be the high risk of dangerous rip currents at the beaches both Saturday and Sunday. With the crowded beaches, this is a big concern. Make sure you heed warnings of lifeguards at all times.

Just to recap our forecast:

  • Today – Partly cloudy with just a popup storm. Still a good beach day, with highs in the mid 80s.
  • Tonight – Clouds increasing with a shower possible.
  • Saturday – More clouds than sun with a shower from time to time at the coast. Inland areas will be dry — with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Highs in the mid 80s inland, near 80 at the coast.
  • Sunday – Partly cloudy with some thunderstorms popping up during the afternoon. Highs in the mid 80s.
