STORMTRACK 3: Beryl to make landfall in FL/GA tonight, head our way midweek

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Subtropical Storm Beryl formed Friday night, making the storm the second in a Hurricane Season that hasn’t officially started yet.

As of Sunday morning, the storm is moving west-southwest at 10 mph and has sustained winds of 50 mph. Beryl is expected to continue on a path into Georgia and Florida through Sunday night and then travel up the East Coast, impacting our weather the most midweek. A cold front from the west will pick up the remnants of Beryl and move the storm northward, which means we could see some substantial rains heading into Tuesday night and Wednesday.

However, southeastern North Carolina will still feel some indirect effects this weekend, including an increase in the chance for spotty showers throughout the weekend as well as a high risk for rip currents and unfavorable boating conditions in offshore waters.

Dangerous rip currents are perhaps the main concern. With the crowded beaches this weekend, make sure you heed warnings of lifeguards at all times.

There are currently no watches/warnings in effect for our area. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for parts of Georgia and Florida.

Here’s a look at your Memorial Weekend forecast:

  • Sunday: Partly cloudy with a 40% chance of showers. Gusty winds out of the E at 15-20 mph. Highs near 80. Rip current risk remains high, with seas at 4-7 feet.
  • Memorial Day: Mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of showers and storms. Highs in the 80’s. Winds out of the SE at 10-15 mph. Seas and rip current risk remain high.

Stay tuned to WWAY for updates, and head to Hurricanes 101.
