Beryl moves on, leaves behind flooding, concerns for Hurricane Season

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Tropical Depression Beryl has come and gone. It left behind a lot of rain And some worries about what’s still to come this summer.

Some areas in southeastern North Carolina got hit harder than others, but many agree that the rain was much needed because of the severe drought.

“The woods are extremely dry,” Fitzhugh Williams of Columbus County said. “The water table’s low. This will help to bring the water table up.”

Other than some flooding, including several areas in Columbus County, especially in and around Chadbourn, the Cape Fear seemed to manage fairly well with little damage from the storm. Most people say they were going about business as usual and didn’t think much of Beryl’s visit.

“I’ve been here for six years, and I’ve been through a lot of storms. I think this is just a rain event,” Chuck Warden of Wrightsville Beach said. “I doubt there is going to be a lot of beach erosion, and there may be some street flooding, but that’s about it.”

Overall, the early storm wasn’t too bad, but some worry that its premature arrival may mean stronger storms to come later this summer.
