State grant to help expand Castle Hayne Park

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A state grant will help expand a New Hanover County park.

The county got a $287,817 matching grant from the NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund to buy 33 acres on the south end of Castle Hayne Park. The County had an opportunity to purchase land surrounding the park at a greatly reduced price and was able to apply for a waiver from the Parks and Recreation Authority. The waiver enabled the County to purchase the land and then apply for a grant to cover a large portion of the price.

The land was purchased with Parks bond funds, and now $287,817 will go back into the bond fund to help fund a new access road into the park.

The Parks and Recreation Trust Fund is administered through the NC Division of Parks and Recreation and was established in 1994 when the General Assembly dedicated 75 percent of the state’s share of the excise tax on real estate deed transfers to the fund.
