NC House votes for gambling changes to aid casino

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A divided state House is supporting changes to North Carolina gambling laws that will allow live table games at the Cherokee Indian casino.

The House gave tentative approval Thursday to the measure which, if finalized, would help facilitate a compact between the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and Gov. Beverly Perdue.

The agreement allows the Harrah’s Cherokee casino to offer live dealer games like poker, craps and roulette. They have only electronic games now. The state will get a cut from revenues generated by the new games.

Bill proponents said the change is essentially about trading in electronic dealers for humans – bringing several hundred jobs to the mountains. Gambling opponents said it would bring more societal ills to the area.

More debate is expected next week.
