Drowning at White Lake
WHITE LAKE, NC (WWAY) — Tragedy in Bladen County, police say a man drowned in White Lake.
Officials say a 20 year old from Lumberton was on vacation, when he went into the lake Friday afternoon and didn’t return to shore.
White Lake Fire Chief Dale Brennan, describes the accident.
“ A young male was going in the water to retrieve a float that was being carried away by the wind, he was about 225 feet off the end of Goldston’s Pier, and I guess he got distressed and gave out and drowned.”
Kim Morris says she has been coming to this quiet lake with her family for forty years and there have been too many deaths.
“I know it says swim at your own risk, no life guard on but at the same time, no one wanting to get involved and you’ve got bystanders that can always help.”
Kim says an important lesson that we all learn in swim class is to always swim with someone. A lesson too many people here forget.
“It’s sad to know that someone knew that he was going out after a float did not call for help, or maybe they did. But not go after him.”
Several law enforcement agencies are investigating. They have not yet released the man’s name.
