NC budget fight likely more about GOP differences

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — This year’s North Carolina state government budget fight may be less about Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue being pitted against Republicans and more about GOP legislative leaders battling with each other.

House and Senate Republicans appear to have stark competing priorities on public education.

That became evident last week after the House approved its adjustments to the two-year budget already in place.

The House plan ignores a public schools overhaul championed by Senate leader Phil Berger. The Senate isn’t yet sold on how the House scales back the amount school districts must return to the state by more than $300 million.

Many of Perdue’s budget suggestions have been ignored, and House Republicans have won over enough Democrats for now to override a Perdue veto, which is what happened last year.
