StormFest gets folks ready for Hurricane Season 2012

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We are just days into Hurricane Season, but the tropics got fired up a little early this year. Although things are quiet now, we still have a whole season ahead of us.

That’s why many Cape Fear residents came out to StormFest 2012 Saturday at the Cape Fear Museum to learn from area experts, including WWAY’s StormTrack 3 meteorologists, about preparing for a hurricane.

The event allowed families to talk with meteorologists, learn from emergency officials and check out hurricane data and maps.

“When all else fails, we’re here to provide communications and backup support during emergency times, and we brought out our mobile command center which has full capabilities for demonstration,” Amateur Radio Emergency Service Capt. Michael Hamby said.

WWAY was there to help people prepare for Hurricane Season and let folks try out the green screen our meteorologists use on-air.

Some of the other guests at StormFest included SkyWarn trained spotters, New Hanover County Emergency Management and the US Army Corps of Engineers.
