Heat, Thunder dream series for meteorologists

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The NBA Finals tips off tonight. It’s been an exciting shortened season for the NBA. Starting tonight, Oklahoma City will take on Miami.

While it may be the match-up fans have wished for, perhaps nobody wanted it more than meteorologists. After all, it is the Heat vs. the Thunder, the all-weather finals!

While Lebron James and Kevin Durant will battle it out on the court, it’s too tough to pick who will win that battle. But what if it was a battle of Mother Nature’s own, and thunder was actually up against heat in a weather war of epic proportions?

Will the heat swelter the thunder, or will the thunder strike the heat a death blow?

Enough analogies, let’s think about it.

Ok, let’s start with the thunder. By itself, it’s merely just a noise, albeit a loud one, that serves to scare kids and dogs, and in itself, it’s completely harmless. But you can’t get thunder without lightning. It’s actually the intense heat of lightning racing through the relatively cool air that creates shockwaves that we hear as the loud boom.

So with thunder we have lightning, sometimes stemming from severe thunderstorms that can bring hail, destructive winds and even deadly tornadoes. There’s no doubt the thunder brings a strong case, even if it’s by association.

On the heat’s side of the argument, we all deal with it during the summer with air conditioning, but left out in the elements, heat is a formidable foe. Get this: it’s heat, not hurricanes, tornadoes or lightning that is the number one killer each year in the US.

If you think about it, without heat, you wouldn’t have any thunder in the first place! The heat from the lightning directly causes the sound of thunder, not to mention that without the heating of the earth’s surface, we’d never be able to create the rising air the brings out the strong thunderstorms. After all, it’s the heating of the earth by the sun that creates all weather in the first place.

So I guess what I’m saying is that heat is all powerful. Does that mean I’m forecasting a Miami victory? If the series goes seven games it will finish up on June 26. A 14-day forecast? Let’s just say at that point, nobody’s good enough to nail that down.

You can watch the entire NBA Finals right here on WWAY. Coverage tips off tonight at 8 p.m. with a special “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night” followed by “NBA Countdown” at 8:30. Game one starts at 9 p.m.
