NC Senate gives final approval to its budget plan

RALEIGH, NC (AP) – The Senate and House have now approved competing budget bills for North Carolina state government for the coming year.

The Senate on Thursday completed the final required votes for a proposed $20 billion plan, approving the Republican-developed proposal on a party-line vote. The Senate version goes to the House, setting the stage for negotiations between the two chambers. The House passed its version two weeks ago.

The final compromise will go to Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue. She vetoed last year’s budget, but legislators overturned the veto.

Thursday’s Senate vote was marked by a Republican amendment unanimously defeated that would have raised sales taxes by three-quarters of a cent. The GOP rolled out the amendment to try to put Democrats on the record about their support for tax increases.
