Inmates stabbed at South Carolina prison
McCORMICK, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say at least five inmates have been stabbed with homemade knives after a fight at a South Carolina prison.
Corrections Department spokesman Clark Newsom said the fight began around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday as inmates returned to their cells from their evening meal at McCormick Correctional Institution.
Newsom says two inmates were taken by helicopter to the Medical University of Georgia Hospital in Augusta with life-threatening injuries. He said the others were transported to Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood. Paramedics treated other injured prisoners on the scene.
Newsom said one officer was slightly hurt trying to break up the fight. He said a response team was sent to the prison to search cell-by-cell for any other weapons or contraband.
The maximum security McCormick prison houses more than 1,250 inmates.
