International Surfing Day celebrates oceans, beaches

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Surfers from around the globe came together to celebrate International Surfing Day Wednesday. In Wrightsville Beach, the Surf Rider Foundation teamed up with Stop Titan to give free surf lessons and organize a beach clean up.

Now in its eighth year, International Surfing Day created by Surfrider has become popular with beach lovers across the world. The purpose is to bring awareness to the sport as well as give back to the oceans and the beaches.

“Surfrider has always been a part of helping protecting our beaches and waterways, and education and activism are the two most important components of that,” Cape Fear Surfrider chair Kathryn Sisler said.

To get better acquainted with the sand and the water, beachgoers collected trash and stayed around for some surfing instructions on the beach with the surfrider team.

“Teaching people about the ocean is the greatest job in the world,” Safety and Training Director Jason Andre said. “It’s not really, doesn’t really feel like work, because you’re in the water, you’re in the ocean, you’re outside, you’re enjoying life and you’re sharing it with other people.”

After practicing in the sand, the surfers headed out into the ocean to put their new skills to use. Smiles were seen from all those celebrating International Surfing Day by catching a few waves.

International Surfing Day is recognized with more than 200 events in 30 countries around the world. Three local beaches participated with free surfing lessons.
