Raleigh lands $21M to begin downtown train station

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina’s capital city has secured a $21 million federal grant to begin work on a train station proposed for the downtown warehouse district.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that the grant means the city can begin track and signal upgrades necessary for Amtrak trains to use the station. Work would transform a vacant Dillon Supply Co. building into a depot with a large waiting hall.

City, state and federal officials will formally announce the grant on Friday at the site of the future station.

The city asked for $60 million from the federal government as part of a joint application. The $21 million will go toward track improvements. Station renovations will come later.

The new building would replace Raleigh’s cramped Amtrak station on Cabarrus Street.
