NC lawmakers agree how to close new Medicaid gap

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The Legislature has agreed on how to close an additional $75 million shortfall in North Carolina’s Medicaid program by letting Gov. Beverly Perdue’s administration tap into building repair money.

The House and Senate approved a measure Thursday that would set aside up to $94 million in the state’s repair and renovations account to reimburse medical providers for Medicaid patients. There’s been a recent unanticipated increase in provider invoices filed with the state. The shortfall was made public last week. Unused money will remain in the repair account.

The General Assembly agreed last month to a $206 million plan to close an earlier gap during the fiscal year that was attributed to several problems.

Thursday’s measure now goes to Perdue to become law.
