NC NAACP president focuses on past violence

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — NC NAACP President Rev. William Barber was in Wilmington Tuesday night specifically to address the issue of the Wilmington 10 and the incident that led to their arrest four decades ago. We asked the Reverend about a current issue in the Port City and what guidance he would offer the community and young people in light of six young men arrested in connection to the robbery and murder of a Chinese food delivery man.

Barber said the rally for pardons for the Wilmington 10 was not the time or place to discuss the recent crime.

“I’m not going to mix the two,” Barber said. “I will talk to you about that separately. The NAACP and African-American people have always been against murder or death of any type. What we are talking about here tonight is when law enforcement and prosecutors and the court system manipulate justice.”

While Barber left without directly addressing the question about the murder of delivery driver Zhen Bo Liu, he did e-mail us later to again say he would talk with us about the issue. We hope to speak with him soon.
