Murder convict may go free with new evidence

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — A North Carolina man who spent nearly 17 years in prison for a murder may be freed in a case in which law officers and prosecutors hid key details from defense lawyers.

Superior Court Judge Joe Turner is scheduled to hear arguments Friday on whether to release 62-year-old LaMonte Armstrong.

Armstrong was convicted of the 1988 killing of Ernestine Compton, one of his former professors at North Carolina A&T State University. Key to the case was testimony from a convicted felon who has since said police pressured him to accuse Armstrong.

Police Chief Ken Miller said investigators have now identified a palm print found at the crime scene belonging to another suspect in the slaying who was later convicted of killing his father and died in a 2010 traffic accident.
