NC museum holds symposium about Doc Watson

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Friends and musical partners of musician Doc Watson are gathering at the North Carolina Museum of Art for a symposium about his life and legacy.

The morning session Saturday at the Raleigh museum examines the roots of Watson’s music in the Blue Ridge Mountains, while the second session concentrates on his success in the urban folk scene.

The final session examines his style and techniques. Participants include Watson’s brother, David, and David Holt, who accompanied Doc Watson on the road since 1998.

Musicians will honor Watson with a concert Saturday night, when Watson originally was scheduled to perform. Watson lived in Deep Gap, and was best known for his lightning-fast style of flatpicking on his guitar.

Watson died May 29 at a Winston-Salem hospital, where he had undergone abdominal surgery.
