NC wildlife group offers reward in elk killing

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A reward is being offered to help catch those responsible for the May killing of three elk near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Haywood County.

The North Carolina Wildlife Federation has pledged $5,000 to anyone who provides information about the elk killing that leads to an arrest, conviction, civil penalty or forfeiture of property by those responsible.

A bull elk was killed with a .22 caliber firearm and a cow was shot with birdshot from a shotgun. The third was a pregnant cow elk that was killed with an unidentified weapon.

The poached elk were part of a reintroduction program by the park that began in 2002. Initially, 25 elk were brought to Cataloochee Valley. The herd has grown to 140 and has spread beyond the park boundary.
