Firefighters work for fun, fellowship
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Firefighters put themselves in danger nearly every day to make sure we are safe. But this weekend, many got together to do their job for fun.
Saturday was the 29th annual Firefighters Freedom Competition in Southport. It’s part of the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration. Fifteen teams from fire departments all across Brunswick, Columbus and New Hanover counties put their skills to the test. While the men and women were competing, the atmosphere was one of comradery.
“We get to work together on emergency scenes, and a lot of times, it’s good just to get together and have some fun and some fellowship and not have to be in a serious mode all the time,” said Southport Fire Department Captain and competition organizer Charles Drew. “Plus it also gets the firefighters to put some of the skills and some of their things into action.”
Brunswick Fire Department from Columbus County took first place while Waccamaw came in second and Supply came in third.
Kids got in on the fun, too, playing in the hoses and learning about the fire trucks.
