Four arrested, baby in protective custody after drug deal goes bad
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man who says he was the victim of a crime wound up in jail over the weekend along with the people he said tried to rob him. The arrests also left a baby in protective care.
Joshua Alan Connett, 24, told Wilmington Police he tried to buy drugs in the parking lot behind the Ramada Inn on Market Street from three people he had bought drugs from before. Connett said this time, though, one of the people pulled out what appeared to be a small hand gun and demanded his money.
Police stopped the car a short time later at 16th and Market. They arrested and took Jamie Ted Pressley, 26, John Ray Tobin Jr., 21, and Leona Lavonya Tobin, 24. Officers also found an eight-month-old baby in the car. They turned the child over to the New Hanover County Department of Social Services.
Police charged Connett with one count of attempting to violate the controlled substance act. He was booked at the New Hanover County Jail with a $1,000 unsecure bond.
Pressley and John Tobin are charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon. Leona Tobin is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, misdemeanor child abuse and reckless driving. They are all in jail under $50,000 bond.
