Veterans honored during ceremony at Wilmington National Cemetery

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The real meaning of the 4th of July was on display this morning at Wilmington National Cemetery. That’s where the New Hanover County Veterans Council held its annual Independence Day Ceremony.

The event is a way for veterans and others in the community to remember those who fought for our freedom. Veterans said events like this are what the 4th is all about.

“When it comes to the 4th of July, everyone thinks its picnics and parties and everything else. That’s not what the 4th of July is about,” veteran Joe Stanley said. “The 4th of July is for us to be here to recognize and honor the veterans that came before us, the one’s that are serving now, and the one’s that are going to serve in the future.”

Today’s guest speaker was Lt. Julia Jones, the commanding officer of Naval Operations Support here in Wilmington.
