Toll delays, school calendar changes become NC law

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Gov. Bev Perdue has signed a bill into law that postpones more North Carolina ferry tolls for another year and tweaks scheduling rules for school districts so students could stay at their desks longer but attend class fewer days.

The omnibus measure signed by Perdue on Tuesday shifts the Legislature’s course on the tolls. The primary budget law approved for this year had required new and higher tolls be collected despite Perdue’s executive order last winter to delay them.

The new law also gives school districts the option to set schedules that meet for 185 classroom days or 1,025 hours beginning in 2013. Schools previously had to meet both hour and day thresholds.

The law also gives give state employees and teachers an extra week of leave this year.
