NC voters pick final party nominees for fall races

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina voters are heading to the polls for runoff elections to choose party nominees for statewide, congressional, legislative and even some local races.

Voting was slated to begin Tuesday morning after an early voting period that saw little interest in the races. Fewer than 37,000 ballots had been collected statewide. State elections administrator Gary Bartlett hoped overall turnout would reach 3 percent of the registered voters.

There are five runoffs for Council of State positions, led by the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor between Dan Forest and Tony Gurley. There are also GOP runoffs for insurance commissioner, secretary of state and schools superintendent. The Democratic nominee for state labor commissioners also will be picked.

There are three congressional candidate runoffs and seven for the General Assembly.
