Leland police stepping up fight against elderly heat cases
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The dangers of heat can especially impact the elderly community. The Leland Police Department is expanding their efforts to keep at risk residents safe through these hot summer months.
It’s called the “Are You OK?” program. It has already been in place for a few years, but with help from volunteers, police department staff will now contact those on a call list to check how they are handling the heat three times a week instead of only calling on Fridays.
“Some of the elderly people may not have family members that can check up on them so we’re able to do that to make sure that they are OK,” says Leland Police Chief Mike James. “That they don’t need any medical attention or anything like the air conditioners or the heaters in the winter time.”
James says those interested in signing up for the program can call the Leland Police Department to be added to the list of residents called.
