NC ranks 34th in overall wellbeing of its children

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A new study ranks North Carolina s 34th in the nation in terms of the overall wellbeing of its children.

The Kids Count survey released Wednesday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation finds that one in four North Carolina children lives in poverty. The percent of North Carolina children living in families where no parent has full-time, year round employment jumped to 35 percent in 2010

But North Carolina ranked among the top 20 states in two education-related indicators: fourth-grade reading proficiency and eighth-grade proficiency in math.

Deborah Bryan, president and CEO of Action for Children North Carolina, says the state must work harder to keep its children from losing ground.
