FIRST ON 3: SBI investigates rape allegation against trooper
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A state trooper is under investigation after a woman says he raped her earlier this week.
A spokeswoman for the State Bureau of Investigation confirms the agency received a request from the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Office today to investigate Tpr. Bryan Phillips for an allegation of sexual assault.
The alleged victim says she met Phillips online a couple of weeks ago. She tells WWAY they’d been talking since. The woman says she met Phillips two nights ago in Wilmington. She says she felt very safe going to his house and just planned to hang out there for a few hours.
The woman says Phillips tried to make her go into his bedroom. When she refused she tried to hide in a bathroom and call 911, but she says Phillips got her out of the bathroom before she could make the call and forced her into the bedroom, where the attack happened.
The woman says she went to Brunswick Novant Medical Center for a rape kit last night. Wilmington Police Department investigators interviewed her at the hospital before the case was transferred to the SBI.
A Highway Patrol spokesman says Phillips is on administrative leave as the SBI investigates.
