Adult care home plan for NC under way

GARY D. ROBERTSON

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s state health agency is moving ahead with a plan to help move mentally ill residents from adult care homes to affordable housing and less restrictive living conditions.

The state Department of Health and Human Services unveiled the plan Thursday that will cost more than $10 million this year and as much as $67 million over eight years.

The plan responds to allegations made in 2011 by the US Department of Justice that the state was failing to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act because so many mentally ill people were living in segregated settings.

It’s unclear whether the plan is enough to prevent federal attorneys from suing the state.

Acting HHS Secretary Al Delia said his agency is moving ahead because it’s the right policy.
