Lumberton officer wounded; suspect in custody

LUMBERTON, NC (AP) — Lumberton police say a suspect in the wounding of a police officer has shot and injured himself.

Police say officer Marcus Norton was shot in the leg early Sunday morning.

Police Chief Mike McNeill says the man thought to be responsible was found in a large trash bin where he shot himself.

McNeill says officers tried for several hours to convince the man to surrender when they heard a gunshot. The Lumberton man was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center for treatment. His condition was not available.

McNeill says Norton is fine. McNeill says he has not talked with Norton and doesn’t know what led to the shooting.

Another officer, Master Police Officer Jeremiah Goodson was shot and killed last month while trying to arrest a suspect.
