WB aldermen approve new Jet Ski speed regulation, third taxi stand in CBD

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Folks who ride jet skis in Wrightsville Beach are going to have to slow down. The Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Thursday to approve enacting an ordinance for Jet Ski operators to drive with no wake 100’ on either side of the Banks Channel bridges.

Mayor David Cignotti says after recent repairs to both the Causeway Drive Bridge and the Salisbury Street Bridge, the DOT found very definite lines of corrosion and deterioration underneath from Jet Ski plumes. He says the salt water was damaging the bridges as well as the water and sewer lines.

The speed regulation cannot be enacted until appropriate signage is attached to both bridges.
Wrightsville beach police say they plan to use their best judgment call of no wake speed when enforcing the new regulation.

Also during the meeting, Aldermen unanimously approved adding a third taxi stand to the central business district to improve congestion and safety of patrons. Wrightsville Beach Police have been testing out the third taxi stand since Memorial Day Weekend. Police Chief Dan House says there have been less pedestrians in the street and businesses have been happy with the addition.

The new stand will be located in front of Lagerheads on North Lumina Avenue.
