CFCC selects new president

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College’s Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Ted D. Spring to serve as CFCC’s next president. He replaces Dr. Eric McKeithan, who retired earlier this year after 18 years on the job.

Dr. Spring is currently the president of New River Community and Technical College in West Virginia. He comes to CFCC with more than four decades of experience in higher education, a great enthusiasm for community colleges and a clear vision for CFCC, the college said.

“The presidential search process has identified an excellent choice for CFCC’s next president. Dr. Spring is an experienced, proven leader who possesses genuine passion, integrity, and vision. Given his past accomplishments, there is no doubt that he will be a valuable asset to our community. The Board unanimously agrees that Dr. Spring is the clear choice to lead CFCC to the next level of success,” Chairman of the CFCC Board of Trustees Barren Nobles said in a statement.

Dr. Spring’s professional career has for the most part been at two-year colleges; however, he has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has over 30 years in higher education administration, serving as a chair of academic divisions, as vice president for academic affairs and as an executive vice president at two colleges.

Dr. Spring explained that he is honored to be selected to serve as CFCC’s next president.

“CFCC has a long history of notable success serving students, business and industry, and the surrounding communities and beyond, and it will be my privilege to serve as its president,” Dr. Spring said. “Working closely with the CFCC Board of Trustees, our faculty and our staff, state and local public officials, and the college’s many friends, we will continue to focus and build on our partnerships and collaborative agreements as the college moves ahead in the next decade. Change is inevitable and I can assure you that we will continue to work hard and smart to keep our college on the cutting edge. CFCC is doing so many great things, remarkable things, and by sharing our success stories, we will encourage and inspire others to come to the college,”

He added that he and his wife, Andrea, are anxious to join the CFCC family and get settled in their new home in North Carolina.

Dr. Spring is the current chair of the Council of North Central Two Year Colleges, chair-elect of the national Rural Community College Alliance organization, and chair-elect of Workforce Region I, which serves an eleven country region in southeastern West Virginia.

He is a first generation college student and a graduate of a community college. He earned an Associate in Applied Science Degree from Adirondack Community College in New York, a Bachelors of Science degree from Castleton State College in Vermont, a Master of Education degree from Bowling Green State University, in Ohio, and his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.

Dr. Frank Sells will continue to serve as the college’s interim president until Dr. Spring begins his term. An official start date for Dr. Spring will be announced in the near future.

The selection is pending final approval from the NC State Board of Community Colleges.
