Burr joins in calling for Missouri candidate to quit after rape comments

WASHINGTON, DC (WWAY) — A North Carolina senator has joined the growing number of Republicans asking the party’s candidate in a race for a US Senate seat in Missouri to quit after making controversial statements about rape over the weekend.

Many of Rep. Todd Akin’s fellow Republicans, including NC Sen. Richard Burr, are urging him to drop out, in the aftermath of his statement that women’s bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of “legitimate rape.”

“Congressman Akin’s comments about rape were outrageous, offensive, and, simply put, wrong,” Burr said in a statement. “I urge him to do the right thing and withdraw from the Missouri Senate race now.”

The Associated Press reports Akin just has a few hours left before a significant deadline. If he’s going to drop out of his Senate race against incumbent Missouri Democrat Claire McCaskill, he has to do so by day’s end. After that, a court order would be needed to remove a name from the ballot.

Akin today posted a video online, apologizing for his remarks.
