StarNews: Ex-Hoggard coach admits assaults on students

By: Brian Freskos

WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline.com) — Joseph Brown Jr., whose six-year tenure as Hoggard High School’s assistant football coach imploded earlier this year amid accusations that he assaulted students on campus, pleaded guilty to criminal charges on Tuesday and was ordered to undergo anger management counseling.

The plea, entered in a New Hanover County courtroom, ends an embarrassing chapter for a school that boasts one of the most successful football programs in the state.

Brown lost his job after accusations surfaced in March that he punched and threatened six students he was supervising in a classroom.

The judge presiding over Tuesday’s plea arrangement ordered Brown to attend anger management classes and complete 36 hours of community service. He is also barred from Hoggard’s school grounds until July 2015, unless the New Hanover County school board gives permission otherwise. The latter stipulation is grounded in the logic that the victimized students will have graduated by then, said Samantha Dooies, an administrative assistant with the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Office.
