Local Republican delegate to network at RNC

PENDER CO., NC (WWAY) — A few Republican delegates from our 7th congressional district have made it to Tampa for the Republican National Convention.

Before he left, we caught up with delegate Bob Muller with the Pender County GOP party to ask about his expectations and what he’s most looking forward to this week.

“It’s going to go red, it’s going to go red.” That’s delegate Bob Muller’s prediction for how the state will vote in November.

This week, the larger-than-life event that solidifies the GOP presidential candidate has kicked off. Muller has only been able to watch past RNCs on television. Although there will be a lot of sights and sounds to take in during his first in-person experience, Muller says he plans to get right to work.

“I think it’s important to get there and to network with the other people in other parts of the state and other parts of the country and talk with them, pick up ideas about them and see what we can do to get the vote out,” Muller said.

More than 40,000 people, including more than 2,000 delegates are converging on downtown Tampa. The event has been years in the making. It comes weeks after Mitt Romney’s campaign announced Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan would join the ticket as the GOP Vice Presidential candidate. Muller says it was the right move.

“I think he’s a great addition to the ticket,” Muller said. Ryan is a smart guy. He’s Budget Chairman for the House. He knows what our financial situation is in this country, which is dire.”

Muller says a change in leadership is necessary to fix the economy and get people in areas like Pender county back to work.

“As you know in North Carolina, we have a high unemployment rate and here in Pender county we have a high rate,” Muller said. “We’ve gotta do something to bring the jobs back to this country and this state. I think that would be helpful to us with their plan as well as Pat McCrory for governor.”
