NC panel reviewing UNC academics concerns to meet

CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) — Members of the state public university system’s oversight board are digging into cases of academic fraud at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and what campus leaders have done about it.

The panel formed by the UNC Board of Governors meets Thursday. It’s expected to hear from UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorpe.

The panel is involved after campus investigations found signs of no-show classes, altered grades, and forged signatures. The academic irregularities appear to have helped athletes, especially members of the Tar Heel football team.

The panel expects to hear later this year from former governor and Davidson College professor Jim Martin, who is leading an independent review after new discoveries pointed to the academic problems going back further in time.
