EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE: Man on a mission for Flight 93 memorial

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Matthew Hunt says one September 11 memorial has been overlooked. That’s why Hunt is driving across the country on a campaign called I-40 for 40, in an effort to raise funds for the Flight 93 National Memorial.

Hunt has packed up his Toyota Prius and is ready to hit the open road today, driving from Wilmington to Barstow, California.

“It’s just a simple way to give back,” Hunt said.

Hunt has made it his goal to draw more attention and generate more funding for the completion of the United Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, PA, where Flight 93 crashed after 40 passengers thwarted an attack on the US Capitol.

“I wish people would just take the time to think about what those 40 passengers did on Flight 93. “

Through Hunt’s campaign, I-40 for 40, he’s asking others to drive 40 miles on Interstate 40 and donate a dollar per mile, leading up to September 11.

“I-40 for 40 is a way for anybody to give back,” Hunt said. “All they have to do is get on I-40 and drive 40 miles.”

Hunt says people often forget that fateful day in Pennsylvania and he says the memorial has been neglected. “It’s the only 911 memorial not fully funded.”

Hunt is hoping to change that during his cross-country drive. To those who ask the question, “Why would one man take on such a challenging task?”

“Without their actions, where would we be today? That’s the question,” Hunt said.
