NC school board voting on 25 more charter schools

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s school board is weighing whether to increase the number of charter schools in the state by 25 next year.

The State Board of Education is scheduled to vote Thursday on a screening committee’s recommendations and authorize the charter schools to open in August 2013. Seven new ones were cleared earlier this year and opened for the new academic year.

Schools that gain approval will start planning and training for opening day, and the state school board has to certify by next spring that they’re ready.

Charters are public schools that are often run by nonprofits and are allowed to operate with fewer of the regulations facing traditional schools. Until state law was changed last year, they were limited to 100 statewide since the first was established in the 1990s.
