Shoaling may cause problems on Ocracoke ferry run

RALEIGH, NC (AP) – State transportation officials say there could be delays, load weight restrictions and possible suspensions on the Ocracoke-Hatteras ferry run because of extreme shoaling in Hatteras Inlet.

A statement from the N.C. Department of Transportation said a threat of severe weather on Tuesday is combining with wind-driven tides and the narrow channel situation to create a safety issue that requires constant monitoring.

The inlet was dredged in May to address an immediate need and is scheduled to be dredged in several weeks by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

On Monday, the ferry division ran its smaller Hatteras Class boats, which draw less water and are easier to maneuver in the shallow passage.

Deputy Ferry Director Jed Dixon is asking local residents and businesses to spread the word of the problem.
