FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: Brunswick deputy charged, placed on leave after fatal accident
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputy is temporarily off the job as he faces charges in a wreck yesterday that killed a man near Calabash.
The Sheriff’s Office says Dep. Adam Lockner, 59, is on paid administrative leave while the BCSO Professional Standards Division and Highway Patrol investigate the accident on US 17 at Shingle Tree Road that killed motorcyclist Thomas Varney. Highway Patrol has charged Lockner with death by motor vehicle and failure to yield the right of way.
The Sheriff’s Office says Lockner was responding to a domestic call when the accident happened.
Lockner has been with the Sheriff’s Office since Oct. 5, 2009. The Sheriff’s Office says he was a detention officer from July 2010 until January 2011, when he was promoted to deputy.
