Duke system begins 24-hour flu vaccination blitz

DURHAM, NC (AP) — Duke University Health System hopes to vaccinate 10,000 of its workers against the flu in a 24-hour blitz that also will include staff at other area hospitals, clinics and health departments.

The vaccine blitz begins Wednesday morning at Duke University Hospital, along with hospitals in Raleigh, health departments in Wake and Durham counties and clinics in Durham. Last year, Duke vaccinated 8,000 of its workers in Raleigh and Durham.

Duke uses the blitz not just as a way to protect its staff and patients against the flu. The effort also tests its ability to handle a mass vaccination if an outbreak of the disease occurred.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older be vaccinated. The flu season usually begins in October.
