NCDOT to close lanes on Wrightsville Beach bridge for repair work

RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Transportation will close some or all lanes of the Wrightsville Beach Drawbridge on U.S. 74/76 at various times between Monday, Oct. 1, and mid-March, 2013, for a bridge rehabilitation project.

All four lanes of the bridge that crosses the Intracoastal Waterway between Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach will be closed overnight on 12 occasions. During these times, police officers will be stationed on either side of the bridge, with only emergency vehicles allowed across. The first overnight closure will take place from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4.

Additional overnight work will require closing three of the four lanes, with eastbound and westbound drivers alternatively using a single lane. A temporary traffic signal will be installed to direct motorists across the 55-year-old drawbridge.

During daytime hours, two lanes will remain open to accommodate eastbound and westbound traffic. A stop sign is being installed at U.S. 75/West Salisbury Street near Wildlife Boat Landing. Westbound drivers will merge in with motorists on U.S. 76.

The bridge rehabilitation project includes installation of a new steel grid floor, upgrades to the operator house, and replacement of motors, locks and other functioning elements.
