Lawyer for MacDonald witness speaks at NC hearing
WILMINGTON, NC (AP) — On a Friday in August 1979, Helena Stoeckley testified that she wasn’t involved in the murders of the pregnant wife and daughters of then-Army Capt. Jeffrey MacDonald and that she didn’t know where she was more than nine years earlier.
Her attorney testified Monday at a hearing in Wilmington that just three days later she told him that story, but she then said she was in the MacDonalds’ Fort Bragg apartment the night of the killings. She said she didn’t participate in the murders.
Attorney Jerry Leonard testified that Stoeckley said a member of an occult group was angry with MacDonald.
The hearing is about new evidence and could determine if MacDonald gets a new trial. He’s serving three life sentences.
MacDonald maintains that intruders killed his family.
