Judge declares mistrial after Cox jury deadlocks

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — It took more than 18 months for Chadbourn’s town manger to go to trial on charges of impersonating a police officer. After all that time, there’s still no resolution in the case.

The judge today declared a mistrial for Stevie Cox after jurors said they could not reach a unanimous decision. Jurors said they were split 7-5. It was not clear which verdict the majority supported.

Cox is accused of impersonating a police officer during a March 2011 traffic stop in the town vehicle belonging to Chadbourn’s police chief. Prosecutors say when he was pulled over while returning from town business in Raleigh, he showed a state trooper the chief’s badge. Cox and the other people in the car with him, including Chadbourn’s mayor, say he never told the trooper he was the chief. Cox maintains he only showed the badge to make it clear he was in the chief’s car and on town business.

WWAY’s Holden Kurwicki has been in court throughout the trial and deliberations. He will have reaction from the Columbus County Courthouse on WWAY NewsChannel 3 starting at 5 p.m.
