Enhancements coming to Sutton Lake boating access

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The boating access area at New Hanover County’s Sutton Lake will close temporarily beginning Oct. 29 to receive a facelift.

Duke Energy, which owns the lake, says the work will be performed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. The improvements include construction of two new boat ramps with new courtesy docks, a new handicap-accessible fishing pier, improved parking and traffic flow including handicap-accessible parking spaces, solar lighting and additional access area signage.

The access area will remain closed until February 2013, when construction is scheduled to be completed. You can get updates on the closure at the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission website and the commission’s Facebook page.

These improvements are expected to enhance the access to the freshwater fishing lake, which holds populations of largemouth bass, bream and catfish.

Sutton Lake is a 1,100-acre lake that provides cooling water for Duke Energy’s L.V. Sutton Energy Complex. It is located off of US Highway 421 at the end of Sutton Steam Plant Road north of Wilmington.
